Blessing of the Pets - St. Peter's Cobourg
The annual blessing of the animals at St. Peter's, Cobourg on St. Francis of Assisi Day has become an increasingly significant event. While most of the animals brought to be blessed are usually domestic pets, this year, for the first time, it included a donkey from the Donkey Sanctuary in Roseneath. Also, among the animals blessed, were some dogs trained by St. John's Ambulance to assist in therapy for human invalids.
The October 3rd service was conducted in St. Peter's new St. Paul's chapel by the rector, Canon Peter Walker, and the animals were blessed by his Associate Priest, the Rev. Claire Wade. In his brief homily Canon Walker stated that St. Francis "could find God anywhere, and especially in the animal kingdom."
